The Impact of the Defenders Leadership Advance

In June, over 30 dads gathered for the 2025 Defenders Leadership Advance (DLA)—a weekend designed to offer rest, reflection, and renewal for fathers navigating the joys and challenges of leading their families. Held at the beautiful Rosen Shingle Creek, the event combined practical teaching, intentional community, and space to reset. For many men, this was the first time in years, maybe ever, they had stepped away from the daily grind to focus on their own growth and well-being.

The impact was deeply personal. Pre-event surveys revealed that the average dad arrived feeling just above a 6 out of 10 in both emotional health and confidence as a father. But by the end of the weekend, those scores jumped significantly to an average of 8.

Through sessions led by Scott Watters, interactive activities, and conversations around shared experiences, dads not only felt seen—they felt equipped. One dad shared, “This isn’t just time away from family. It’s a chance to reconnect, reflect, and grow. I realized I’ve been carrying more than I knew.” Another admitted, “I’ve got to regulate. I have to stop and think about what I’m going to do before I do it.”

One dad wrote, “The Advance is a place to be open and share your struggles, learn more about yourself, and receive as well as give support.” And another reflected, “You need this more than you realize—and you won't realize it until you're here.”

One of the most celebrated moments of the weekend was Casino Night—a fun and pressure-free space with mock money that helped build bonds between dads who might otherwise feel isolated. And while the laughter and games were memorable, it was the deeper takeaway that stuck with many: You’re not in this alone.

Looking ahead, dads expressed excitement about staying connected through monthly Defender gatherings organized by geographic area—creating spaces to support each other between now and the next DLA in 2026. The momentum is growing, and these dads are returning home stronger, calmer, and more connected—ready to lead with renewed purpose.

Commission 127 is honored to host this one-of-a-kind experience—one of the only retreats in the country specifically designed for dads of children from hard places.

And it’s only possible because of the generosity of donors and supporters who believe in this mission. Their giving makes room for healing, community, and transformation—and these dads are living proof.
